Exploring Boston’s Jewish History Through Current Day Landmarks

Introduction

This story-map explores Jewish life in Boston from the 1880s to the 1920s through landmarks in Boston that still exist today. The map focuses on the Vilna Shul, Beth Israel Hospital, the Puffers Building, and the Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA). Through these locations, this story-map explores the historical past of each landmark, why these places were important to Jewish immigrants in Boston at the time, and how they continue to hold meaning in the present day. It uses a photo juxtaposition slider to contrast historical and current photos of each location.
